New Road Worcester on the banks of the Severn, a warm sunny afternoon in early autumn, the Cathedral as a magnificent backdrop – the perfect setting for a cup final! Worcestershire CCC Under 12 T20 Final Ombersley v Earlswood.

First of all we must thank Ryan D’Oliveira and the staff and match officials at Worcester for hosting us and running the match –I can safely say that the wicket we played on was by far the best of the season! And thanks also to our opponents Ombersley, a talented group of players who competed in a sporting and friendly manner and fully contributed to a great game of cricket. And of course a big thank you to all the supporters who cheered us on from the stands and made it feel almost like an Ashes test match!

To the match…
After winning the toss and putting Ombersley in, Gab and Ash got us off to a positive start taking 2 early wickets. Ombersley then fought back well with Tom Edwards and Sean Auden taking the score to 47 in the 8th over, before some sharp work by Sachin resulted in a run out to break the partnership. Harshal and Ethan (running straight on to bowl in the 9th over whilst changing football boots for spikes!) then put the squeeze on, restricting the scoring to just 28 and picking up 3 vital wickets in their 8 overs. This was backed up by excellent work in the field by the whole team as Ombersley looked to accelerate – special mentions to Ryan, James and Callum for some great athleticism cutting off boundaries and to Jacob for a super catch off Harshal. With the pressure to post a big total increasing and despite some impressive counter-attacking by Alfie Galvin , wickets fell at regular intervals. Ethan, Jacob and Milan each chipped in with a wicket before Ash returned with an excellent 1 for 1 in the last over. Ombersley closed on 88 for 9 – a competitive total certainly. However after pegging Ombersley back from 50/2 at the half way stage we really felt the momentum was with us and were confident of being able to chase the runs with sensible batting.

Which is just what we got! The foundations were laid by Milan and Ash – 30 in the first 4 overs eased any early nerves and we reached 47 before Ash finally fell for an excellent 16. Callum was really unlucky to be run out (again – sorry Cal!) before Ed came in and hit the accelerator. By the time Milan retired not out on a splendid 31 to much deserved applause, we had reached 74 in the 12th over and were well placed for victory - despite some very accurate spin bowling from Ben Hallum and Cameron Taylor. Ethan played a brief but rapid cameo before he and Ed fell in successive balls - both caught trying to win the game with typically flamboyant strokes! It was left to Sachin and Gab to see us home, the winning shot being a lovely straight drive by Gab for 4 to take us to our target with 3 overs to spare.

Handshakes and 3 cheers followed, before the presentations - with both teams rightly being praised by Ryan for a high quality match played in an exceptionally good spirit - and of course the celebratory custard creams and team photos!

Final word rightly goes to the boys – it was (yet another) great team performance with every single one of the boys supporting his team mates, contributing to the victory and the spirit the match was played in. Special thanks to our skipper, Ed, not only for his great work behind the stumps and with the bat throughout the tournament, but for leading and motivating the team so confidently, enthusiastically and successfully – he left very little for me to do on match days! I’m equally proud of all the boys who have represented themselves, their families and Earlswood CC in the tournament this season. All 26 of them in fact – the eleven who turned out today plus Ajay, Archie, Ben F, Ben W, Dan, Declan, Ethan P, Jamie, Louie, Luke, Matt, Nathan, Sam, Stuart and Tom who played in the earlier matches; all have played with talent, enthusiasm and great sportsmanship.

This was a fitting end to a great 2015 for Earlswood Under 12s!
