So how much does it cost to run a cricket club these days?

The 2016 accounts were presented at the recent General Meeting and gave us an inkling into the costs of running our club.

Some headline numbers include:

Over £5,500 on playing expenses including teas, umpires fees, trophies, scorebooks etc. We now run 23 teams and the cost of cricket balls alone was nearly £2,000 last season which will go up this year as we add a fifth senior side on a Saturday.

We play in the Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Cotswold Hills League and each team has to pay competition and affiliation fees which last year came to just under £600.

Groundsman Dave Snipe does a sterling job on the square and outfield considering just how much cricket is played on it. We play significantly more junior fixtures than any other club in the area but that frequently means ground hire. That cost nearly £2,000 last season and will increase this year with the 5s paying at Henley-in-Arden CC.

Simply maintaining the ground is one of our largest costs and includes: materials such as loam for the square; diesel for the mowers; tree maintenance; annual worming; machine repairs, hedge cutting and the weekly cutting and maintaining of the square and outfield etc. This came to over £5,500 last year.

Running and maintaining the pavilion cost over £4,000 including cleaning, general repairs, bar licenses, TV licenses and subscriptions, kitchen supplies, soap and loo rolls ... it all adds up!

Of course we have the usual rates, rubbish removal, electricity, water expenses, public liability insurance, pavilion insurance all of which came to over £4,000 last year.

We also made some significant investments last year which included the first part of improving the practice nets due for completion this season, the purchase of the sit-on mower and the start of the refurbishment costs for the women's changing room all of which added up to nearly £6,000.

Fortunately the membership supports the club well through the bar ... don't be shy at continuing that!
