The Sunday 1s arrived at Watery Lane on Sunday 18th August top of Division 2 of the Arden League. This was to be Elliot Weir’s last game after three years at the helm with the league title in our grasp.
Unusually Elliot lost the toss and Coleshill elected to bat. They made a bright start until quick work with the gloves by Elliot (that man again!) getting a stumping off Dan Dixon to remove the dangerous Mo Daniyaal for 36 off 30 balls. From there the machine that is the Earlswood CC Sunday XI bowling took over; led superbly by Shaun Jenkins with 4-40 ably supported by Dan Dixon with 3-50 and Alex Weir, Noah Massey and Seb Caldicott all chipping in with a wicket each; the Coleshill innings ground to an end 199 all out off 39.3 overs.
In response Earls found batting conditions tricky with the top order getting starts but not kicking on – Alex Weir (14), Elliot Weir (14), Momin Hussein (23) and Harvey Williams (13). When Harv was out we were 121-6 off 29.3 overs needing 79 to win (7.5 an over). Noah Massey and Dan Dixon set about the task with purpose adding 56 runs in 7 overs with three big sixes between them. They didn’t see it out with Dan (23) and Noah (38) out in quick succession, nonetheless the damage was done and Noman Naseer (14no) and Shaun Jenkins (5no) saw us home to a famous two wicket win finishing on 200-8 off 39.4 overs.
What a fantastic win – seeing us up to Division 1 of the Arden League, a fitting way to bring Elliot’s three years as captain to an end. Big shoes for Harvey Williams to fill as skipper next year but as top scorer and wicket taker in the league this year (343 runs and 15 wickets); our Harv looks well placed to push on.
Well done lads!
