Knowing me, knowing you - Alex Laud

Earlswood CC21 Apr 2020 - 05:27

Time for the Club Captain to take the stage

How long have you been playing at Earlswood?
2 years

What do you enjoy most about playing at Earlswood?
Having played at other clubs, the club and family atmosphere is really rare and is great to be a part of. Since I first arrived it's been the most obvious thing about the club and it is so different to practically everywhere else.

The other side is the fact that so many of the players have come through the club and we shouldn't take for granted how incredible that is. To put out five sides every Saturday with the majority of players having been brought up through the club is against the trend of almost every other club in the country who are often struggling to put two sides out and have no youth section. It's something the club should be very proud of.

Highest score for Earlswood?
97 against Weoley Hill - jug avoidance.
96 v Weoley Hill, 18/08/2018 [Ed - sorry Skip, the scorer must have taken one off you for that jug avoidance]

Best bowling figures?
I think I might have burgled a 3fer with my wily 'off spin'
3 - 24 v Studley, 31/08/2019

[Ed - I also found this whilst getting the Studley scoresheet ... you need to have a word with the Captain and get you on more regularly! 8 - 45 in Division 2 of the Rutland League on 09/08/2009 aged 16!]

Best moment in cricket so far?
At Earlswood, I think the games that we have won at home have always been brilliant when there are people watching on the decking. Also, Bussey getting Players' Player last year because it meant so much to him and everyone else.

Favourite away ground?
Knowle & Dorridge

You need to take a road trip but must take three team-mates. Who gets the call?
George, Arron and Callum Hassett although I'd have to cover my ears for 90% of the conversation.

Who would be banned from the car stereo?
Arron's former life as a 'DJ' has not had a positive impact on his taste in music.

Who is the captain in the making?
Josh Craven if he stops being so bloody miserable. He reads the game really well.

Sam Weir has got great character as well.

Who is the dressing room Joker?
George Calkeld. There's never a quiet moment, and I mean never.

The dressing room with Arron, George winding up Marv was a brilliant laugh.

Who can’t step away from the mirror?
I'll go with Joe Pietrafesa.

Worst time-keeper?
Chief, although judging by the winter nets it will be a close competition with Bilal Mohammed.

Who is the most dedicated trainer who puts you all to shame?
Callum Bennett or Joe P probably in terms of dedication.

Joe Mac is probably the best trainer, trains really hard.

Who has the worst potty mouth?
If it's while he's bowling then Arron. When you're in the third over of the game and the umpire wants a word because he's called someone a f****** jammy b****** for smashing a four through cover...

Callum Hassett has his moments as well.

Who is Mr or Mrs Smooth?
Chief

Who is least likely to put the rope out?
Arron Snipe. He's always 'setting up' the warm up (putting 5 cones out). Honorary mention for George Calkeld as well.

I'll defend Callum as well, he is always the one who has to sort the rope out when someone has tangled it.

Who do you need to be ahead of in the queue to ensure you get some tea?
Joe P. He once ate about 50 chicken nuggets on the way to a game. He eats like a condemned man at his last meal.

Best away ground tea?
Dunlop stars. There's nothing like walking a mile from the square after 50 overs in the field to have a dry piece of cake and two biscuits.

Fillongley was quite good.

Funniest thing you’ve seen on a cricket ground?
At Earlswood, probably Marvin Rice making a brilliant stop at backward point with his nether region. He then proceeded to field for the remaining 40 overs or so in a cross between a fit of rage and a vow of silence with George and Arron laying into him for causing damage to the ball.

Who’s the best Earlswood cricketer you have played with?
Matt Edwards and Chief; both have incredible natural ability.

Grumpiest team-mate on the pitch?
Probably Callum Hassett or Josh Craven.
